It’s week 2 for Indiana high school football and you know what that means, the next SISN featured “Game of the Week.” The North Central (Farmersburg) Thunderbirds travel to Elnora to take on the North Daviess Cougars in a battle of class A schools. Both teams are coming off a loss and look to right the ship Friday night.

North Central (Farmersburg)

Coming off a Sectional title win over then #6 in class A Springs Valley last year, the Thunderbirds looked to carry that momentum into the 2022 campaign. They started the season as they did last year, losing to North Vermillion 27-16 in a game that was just a few plays away from turning in the other direction. The Thunderbirds are a bit one-dimensional this year as they only ran one passing play for 6 yards. Their rushing game seems to be near mid-season form though as they used a running back by committee approach and rushed for 172 yards as a team. Were it not for an untimely turnover, who knows how week 1 would have gone for them. Defensively they were carved apart by North Vermillion QB Jerome White who passed for 124 yards with a 139.1 QB rating. They also gave up a lot on the ground with N.V. rushing for 202 yards on the Thunderbirds defense. Look for Head Coach Joe Kutch and his staff to use this week to shore up some things on defense and continue to pound the ball on the ground. We’ll soon find out if week 1 was an anomaly or if this is going to be a tough year for the Thunderbirds.

North Daviess

After covering North Daviess magical run to the state championship in basketball last year we have gained a ton of respect for AD/Head Bball coach Brent Dalrymple and have kind of become part of the North Daviess Family. But this is football season. It is time to see if the Cougars are more than a basketball school. Judging from their performance in Week 1 its not looking good for the Cougars. They lost in disappointing fashion to non-conference foe Tecumseh 49-12. The cougars allowed the Braves to dominate them in the first half and is not a team that can easily come back once down. For the Cougars to win in week two they need to pounce early (pun intended) and look for Cougars QB Brock Knepp to try and get the passing game going early on.

SISN Prediction

As much as the North Daviess faithful may not like this, heck I may even be kicked outta the “family” down in Elnora, I look for the North Central Thunderbirds to keep that running game going and shore up some things on defense to come out with the win in a tough, close contest.
